FIG 128. First-summer common tern (about one year old) photographed near a breeding colony. Most terns of all species remain in their winter quarters until they are two years old, but a very small number migrate north in their first summers and reach the breeding areas. The first summer plumage is similar to the winter adult, but some individuals have red legs and partly red bills. This bird is identifiable as a common tern by the extensive black on the primaries, as well as by the dark grey outer edges of the tail. Seaforth, Merseyside. (Steve Young)
